We are always thankful for our volunteers but what better time to say a particular ‘thank you’ during #TrusteesWeek19.

Trustees play a vital role, volunteering their time and working together to make important decisions about the charity’s work. There is an impressive 1 million trustees in the United Kingdom.

While Trustees play a more specific role in the governance and strategic direction of our charity, every single one of our volunteers make NAB’s work possible. From ‘Volunteer Drivers’ to ‘Talking News Editors’ and ‘Social Group Organisers’, all these roles play a vital role in helping visually impaired people across Northamptonshire.

I have been the volunteer co-ordinator with NAB for nearly 10 years. Before that I worked closely with volunteers whilst working for Oxfam for 8 years as an Area Manager.

What I love about my job is the opportunity to work closely with all of my volunteers. Volunteers are passionate people determined to make an impact on causes they love, and as a volunteer manager I am passionate about volunteers, doing everything I can to support them to feel that they are making a difference.

People with sight loss often become isolated and lose confidence. Working as a NAB volunteer will have a direct impact on helping blind and partially sighted people to live life to the full, and that is truly fantastic.

My pledge is that all of my volunteers will be well managed, supported, appreciated and have a great volunteering experience with us.

I think the benefits of volunteering are:

  • Volunteering connects you to others
  • Volunteering is good for your mind and body
  • Volunteering makes you feel happier and healthier
  • Volunteering can advance your career.

A volunteer role is an amazingly empowering experience. Even helping out with the smallest task can have a profound and positive improvement to people in need. Surely that’s a fantastic way to make the most of each day and to feel uplifted in doing so.
